I believe he knew somewhat of the big risk he was taking, but also was very confident in what he was doing. We see he sacrifice a lot to go on this hike and did not try to take the easy way at all. He was offer easier way but did not want to take it. I also believe he may have not knew as well because the journey was a long way and maybe he did not take in mind how long it would be and the specific risk It would take.
